Reading, Reading and Some More Reading

Well I have made it through the first week of classes and the first weekend is almost over. So far we just have a ton of reading that we have to do and a couple 1-3 page papers which are not too bad.

Currently there seems to be some confusion amongst everyone as to how the syllabus is laid out and what exactly we have to have done by tomorrow for my 620 class. So as were attempting to get to the bottom of the mystery I'm jumping between classes trying to stay productive and get stuff done. And as you can probably tell I'm not doing so great today because I'm writing this post instead of reading pages 1-52 of Vol. 1 of our ICS 620 Coursepack.

This weekend wasn't too hectic for me, granted it is the first weekend and I'm still not completely caught up with HW. I worked on HW and celebrated Court and my 3 year anniversary on Friday, worked on more HW and went to my buddies flea market on Saturday, which was huge and took us almost 5 hours to go through fairly quickly, and today is primarily a homework day.

On that note I'm going to stop this post abruptly and get back to my homework...

I wish I could reader faster...

The First Few Days

My graduate life has hit the floor running at full speed!

So far each of my prof's have taught in very different styles. From yelling and dancing around the room while demanding debate and conversation to the traditional stand in the front and lecture. Each one bringing their own special technique and skill set to the table to challenge every aspect of my being. I'm excited, nervous, stressed, and feel like my head is spinning as I try to process all that is going on.

I'm quickly learning that my master's education is not just the information in the books, on the boards and in my tests. But almost more importantly the experiences that I have as a student trying to make my way.

One class seems to focus on "Thriving on Chaos". The Prof does a very good job of making life so far, very chaotic while dealing with his class. Making everyone feel like they are struggling to keep their heads above water. And it's only day 1 of his class.

I have met 3 of my professors so far: The Chaotic, The Tough Love, and the Tangent Man.

I meet my 4th professor Thurs evening, the man who founded the program. Bringing it from a small unfinished closet to the nationally recognized power house that it is today. I am very much looking forward to what exciting and interesting personality and skill set he will bring to the table.

I must stop writing now. There is a stack of assignments to get cracking on and I CAN NOT put them off.

C'est la Vie!

Orientation

Well, Today I went to the mandatory CICS orientation meeting at the Alumni Center on campus. It was basically a meet and greet for students, professors and staff that are apart of the program as well as a "what to expect" kind of thing.

Basically what I found out is what I have already heard from numerous people about that program. I am assuming most of the readers are family members and I have already told you about the program but just in case I will inform/remind you of what I am going to be doing for the next 11 months.

Here is a good video that one of the alumni made as their 2 minute "elevator" speech about the program.
as for as how life as a student is in the CICS program it is a non-stop, kickin' your ass, no sleep, finish your shit 11 months that people keep saying that they feel bad for me and think I am crazy when they find out I am going into this. I'm not sure what else to tell you so you will have to stay tuned as I progress through the program and hopefully still find time to update this blog.

I am excited with a little dash of nervous about the program. I know what I have to do to survive it, I just need to remember those things and be good about keeping them up.

Wish me luck because tomorrow it all starts. 8a I start my semi-new job and then at 3:30p I have my first class! I'll let you know how it all goes down!

P.S. One of the other students (part time and one of the ones who said they feel bad for me) and fiance (also a part time student) is an English Mastiff breeder!! They brought one of their puppies to the social event after the actual meeting. His name is Brutus and he is only 10 Months old and already 170 lbs! So much fun!

Welcome

Welcome to my blog.

My name is Matt Drummond and I'm creating this blog to document my life as I go through the Center for Information and Communication Sciences (CICS) Graduate Program at Ball State University. I will be attending classes, working with the Networking Dept of University Computer Services as a Graduate Assistant, attending CICS social events, busting my ass to do the best that I can to get through this program, and most importantly living my life.

This blog will contain any personal, academic and or professional tid bit that I feel I would like to share with you. I don't really care if you enjoy reading my blog (although I hope you do and that you will feel free to leave as many comments as you would like!) and I hope to you see that you are checking back often!
